Can the Value of Design Be Measured on One Scale?
Can the quality of a design be captured by ease of use alone? There are tools that are usable yet inspire no attachment, and tools we cannot part with despite their inefficiency. This mismatch signals that the value design produces does not fit a single yardstick.
Design research and the adjacent social sciences have confirmed this intuition from separate places. One lineage measures the efficiency of tools, another examines learning from experience, another the relations between people, and yet another concerns recognition and the constitution of the self. What each of them calls “the value of design” rests on different theory and is measured differently.
This note maps, relying only on established published sources, the dimensions into which design value has been discussed. It begins with instrumental usability and proceeds through cognition and meaning, the distinctive stance of designing, the relations of communities of practice, and the dimension of recognition. It makes no claim that binds these dimensions into a single ranked system. It sets side by side the fact that separate literatures have illuminated separate facets of value.
Instrumental Value: Usability Can Be Measured
The earliest facet of design value to be formalized was performance as a tool. In The Design of Everyday Things (1988), Norman showed that the usability of everyday objects is a matter of design rather than of the user’s psychology[^norman]. Whether a door should be pushed or pulled, which light a switch controls: users get confused not because they lack attention but because the form of the object fails to convey the possibilities for action correctly. With the vocabulary of affordances and signifiers, mapping, and feedback, Norman translated usability into design decisions.
It was Nielsen who reduced this instrumental value to an engineering procedure. Usability Engineering (1993) decomposed usability into learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors, and satisfaction, each an object of observation and measurement[^nielsen]. Usability became a quantity observable as task completion rates or time on task, not a subjective impression. Nielsen’s heuristic evaluation spread to practice the rule of thumb that even a small number of evaluators can detect most design problems.
The instrumental lineage is strong in making the utility of design measurable in reproducible form. Yet what it measures is confined to cases where the goal is given and the task is already defined. What the goal ought to be, and what the tool changes in the user, lie outside this yardstick. The discussion of value does not close with usability precisely because of this boundary.
Cognitive Value: Learning from Experience, Making Meaning
Design is not only about dispatching tasks efficiently; it also bears on the user’s understanding and learning. This dimension is illuminated by the lineages of experiential learning and meaning-making.
In Experiential Learning (1984), Kolb formalized learning as a cycle of concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation[^kolb]. In this model, which integrates Dewey, Lewin, and Piaget, knowledge is constructed through the transformation of experience. When a designed tool or environment aids learning, it does so not by conveying information but by making the cycle of experience and reflection easier to turn.
Bruner, on the other side, recast cognition not as information processing but as the construction of meaning. Acts of Meaning (1990) argued that people make sense of events in the form of narrative and understand the world through frameworks of interpretation shared within a culture[^bruner]. Design engages cognition because it works on what the user takes an object to be and the narrative into which it is placed. Kolb treats the cycle of learning; Bruner, the mode of meaning-making. The two are separate faces of cognitive value, not reducible to a measure of efficiency.
Design Attitude: The Distinctive Stance of Designers
Shifting the bearer of value from the user to the designer brings another dimension into view. This is the argument that design has a stance peculiar to how it confronts problems in the first place.
In “Designerly Ways of Knowing” (1982), Cross argued that design has a mode of knowing distinct from both the natural sciences and the humanities[^cross]. Designers develop problem and solution together and leap to an integrative proposal while the information is still incomplete. This mode was described as a type of cognition different from analytic problem solving.
What Cross discussed as a mode of knowing, Michlewski recast at the level of the organization. “Uncovering Design Attitude” (2008) described the professional culture designers share as five dispositions[^michlewski]. Embracing uncertainty and ambiguity, engaging the senses fully, generating new meaning, confronting complexity, and exercising human-centered empathy. Michlewski called this design attitude and located it not as individual talent but as a stance cultivated within professional practice. Attitudinal value resides not in the artifact but in the very way of confronting design.
Relational Value: Communities of Practice Create Value
Moving the seat of value from the individual to the collective leads to the lineage of communities of practice. Here value appears as the relations between people and the learning that occurs within them.
In Situated Learning (1991), Lave and Wenger recast learning not as a transfer of knowledge into the head but as a deepening of participation in a community[^lave-wenger]. Newcomers engage in practice from a peripheral position and, through legitimate peripheral participation, gradually move toward the center. Learning happens not in the individual’s interior but as a change in relation to the community.
Wenger developed this view in Communities of Practice (1998), characterizing a community of practice by three elements: mutual engagement, a joint enterprise, and a shared repertoire[^wenger]. Identity is formed through participation in the community, and meaning is negotiated. The value this lineage illuminates is the quality of relations, such as collaboration, trust, and belonging, that cannot be reduced to individuals. When design reshapes how people relate to one another, it produces value in this relational dimension.
Recognition and the Ontological Dimension: Design Touches the Constitution of the Self
Finally, the discussion of value reaches the constitution of the self itself. This is the dimension in which designed environments and practices bear on who a person is and how they are recognized by society.
In The Struggle for Recognition (1995), Honneth argued that a person’s relation to self is sustained by three forms of recognition[^honneth]. Love (emotional recognition in the sphere of intimacy), rights (respect as a legal subject), and solidarity (esteem through social valuation). When these are damaged, a person experiences injustice. To speak of value at the level of recognition is to ask not about the utility of an object but about what it brings to a person’s self-understanding and social standing. Design research touches this dimension through questions of participation and exclusion, of being made visible or invisible.
That said, systematizing this level of value into a single model and asserting, as a general proposition, its dependency on the lower dimensions exceeds the reach of the established literature. What can be shown here is that recognition can be discussed as an independent dimension, and that its theoretical grounding lies in Honneth’s theory of recognition.
Practice Theory as a Reframing Lens
The dimensions set out above can be read as traits belonging to the individual’s interior, or as socially formed practices. Practice theory offers the latter reading.
In Outline of a Theory of Practice (1977), Bourdieu proposed the concept of habitus[^bourdieu]. A person’s dispositions are neither innate character nor free choice, but durable stances embodied within a social position. A “stance” such as design attitude can, on this view, be read not as individual talent but as an embodied disposition acquired in the field of practice.
It was the practice turn that generalized this reframing as social theory. In The Site of the Social (2002), Schatzki grasped social order as the entanglement of a nexus of practices with material arrangements[^schatzki]. In “Toward a Theory of Social Practices” (2002), Reckwitz organized this turn and formalized a practice as a routine in which body, mind, things, knowledge, and emotion are joined[^reckwitz]. From the standpoint of practice theory, the dimensions of value listed above appear not as attributes of the individual but as effects of socially maintained practices. No dimension holds up once severed from the arrangement of practices that sustains it.
How to Read the Map of Value
Design value cannot be reduced to a single scale because each dimension is rooted in a separate theoretical tradition. Instrumental value rests on usability engineering, cognitive value on the psychology of experiential learning and meaning-making, attitudinal value on design research, relational value on situated learning and communities of practice, and the dimension of recognition on social philosophy.
These are not competing explanations but separate light sources illuminating different facets of value. A usable tool can lack attachment because instrumental and relational value hold independently. An efficient design does not necessarily promote learning because instrumental and cognitive value are different yardsticks. Practice theory cuts across these dimensions to show that each is an effect of socially formed practice.
This note neither ranks the dimensions nor binds them into one model. When evaluating the value of a design, the first use of the map is to be aware of which dimension one is asking about. And the map keeps reminding us that success in one dimension does not guarantee value in another.
