「新規性が足りない」は何を見て書かれているのか
査読報告で最も落胆させる否定は、方法の誤りでも標本の小ささでもなく、「新規性が足りない」である。 だがこの一文は、論文のどこを読んで書かれたのだろうか。 判定の根拠になった箇所は、査読報告に明示されないことが多い。
実務の側には、この曖昧さを畳んでしまう見立てがある。 論文の構成上、新規性が宿りうる場所は五つしかない、というものだ。 Related Work、Problem Definition、Materials、Methods、Results。 このうち Related Work はレビュー論文の領分だから、研究論文で勝負できるのは残る四つ。 一つだけでは弱いが、二つ以上に「そこそこの新規性」があれば査読者は落としづらく、他の研究者も引用してくれる。 そして Results で勝負するのは、必要な費用と労力が莫大だから避けたい。
経験則としてはよく効く見立てである。 問題は、どこまでが文献で裏の取れる話で、どこからが処世術なのか、その境目が見えないことにある。 四つの座には、それぞれ独立した学術的系譜がある。 問題の定義には problematization の研究、材料には strategic research materials、方法には tools-to-theories がある。 ところが、四つを「論文の構成要素」として並べ、節と貢献の型を対応づけた定式化は、文献の側に見当たらない。
貢献の型は誰がどう数えてきたか
貢献の種類を数える仕事自体は、学界の側でも繰り返されてきた。 Wobbrock と Kientz は、HCI の研究貢献を経験的、アーティファクト、方法論的、理論的、データセット、サーベイ、意見の七型に分類した1。 Oulasvirta と Hornbæk は Laudan の問題解決論を下敷きに、HCI が扱う問題を経験的、概念的、構成的の三型に分け、型ごとに解の良さの基準が違うことを示した2。 CHI の投稿ガイドは、アーティファクト、ユーザー理解、システムとツール、方法論、理論、革新とビジョン、論証、検証と再現の八型を並べる3。 Whetten は理論的貢献を What / How / Why / Who-Where-When の四要素に分解し、要素ごとに貢献が成立しうると規定した4。 Corley と Gioia は、貢献を originality(漸進的か啓示的か)と utility(科学的か実践的か)の二軸で類型化した5。
これらの類型は、どれも「論文が何を差し出すか」で切っている。 「論文のどの節に書かれるか」では切っていない。 節を単位にした分析は別系統にある。 Kanoksilapatham は生化学論文60本の IMRAD 全節を修辞的な move に分解し、15の move を提案した6。 だがその move は「先行研究を要約する」「手順を述べる」といった書く行為の単位であって、貢献の種類ではない。 IMRAD という構成そのものも、1950年代に普及して1980年代に標準化した比較的新しい書式である7。
今回の収集では、IMRaD の各節と貢献の型を規範的に対応づけた学術的定式化は見つからなかった。 四座分類は学術的定式化の要約ではなく、実務知として独立に成立している。 学術側の類型が節を無視して貢献の内容だけを見ているのには理由がある。 同じ種類の貢献が、分野によって違う節に書かれるからである。
Related Work は座から外れるのか
四座説の最初の切り落としは Related Work である。 先行研究の整理はレビュー論文の仕事だから、研究論文の新規性はそこには宿らない。 新規性が生まれる場所としては、そのとおりである。 だが新規性が読者に伝わる場所としては、話が逆になる。
Swales の CARS モデルは、研究論文の序論を三つの動きで記述する8。 領域の確立、ニッチの確立、ニッチの占有である。 新規性が言語として立ち上がるのは第二の動き、つまり先行研究を並べたうえで、そこに欠けているもの、矛盾しているもの、続けるべきものを指し示す位置にある。 Swales はこの動きをさらに、対抗主張、空白の指摘、問いの提起、伝統の継続の四手順に分けた。 Locke と Golden-Biddle は組織研究の論文を質的に分析し、序論が「文献の場の構成」と「問題化」という二つの過程で貢献の機会を修辞的に作り出していることを示した9。 Luzón Marco は計算機科学の論文で、著者が評価語と語彙的結束によって自分の研究を既存知識に編み込み、問題と解決の型で新規性を構築していると報告した10。 Kwan は博士論文の文献レビュー章が、序論の CARS Move と重なりながら独自の新規性主張機能を担うことを示した11。 Hyland は自己引用と自己参照が、知識主張の信頼性と個人的貢献の強化に使われることを実証した12。 Patriotta は編集者の立場から、新規性が引用を通じた会話への参入として社会的に構築されると論じている13。
Related Work は、新規性を生む座ではないが、新規性を名乗る座ではある。 四座のどこかに新規性があっても、Related Work で名乗り損ねた論文は、新規性がないと読まれる。 冒頭の「新規性が足りない」という査読報告に戻ると、その判定材料の少なくとも一部は、この節から取られている。 名乗りの言語自体もインフレを起こしている。 PubMed 抄録の肯定語の頻度は1974年から80年の 2.0% から2014年の 17.5% へ増え、novel、robust、innovative、unprecedented はそのなかでも増加幅が大きい14。
Problem Definition という座
四座のうち、学術的な裏づけが最も厚いのが問題の定義である。 処方の理論があるからだけではない。 その処方を実際にはほとんど誰も使っていない、という実証があるからでもある。
Sandberg と Alvesson は組織研究の論文52本を分析し、問いの構成のほぼすべてが gap-spotting だったと報告した15。 gap-spotting は、文献に欠落、不十分さ、不正確さ、未応用の領域を見つけて埋める作法で、この四型に分けられる。 これに対して problematization は、既存理論が寄りかかっている前提そのものを同定して挑む16。 挑む対象の前提は、理論内部の前提、その分野が共有する根拠、パラダイム、イデオロギー、場の前提という五層に整理されている。 Alvesson と Sandberg は、研究者が専門分野の「箱」に閉じ込められる制度的機構も分析し、箱を変える、箱を跳び越える、箱を超越するという三つの脱出戦略を示した17。
前提に挑むという操作は、どの程度挑むかで結果が変わる。 Davis は、「面白い」理論とは聴衆が持つ前提の一部を否定するものだと定式化した18。 前提を全否定すれば馬鹿げていると受け取られ、何も否定しなければ自明と受け取られる。 Bartunek らは AMJ 編集委員へのサーベイでこの条件を確認し、面白さの中心にあるのは前提の部分否定だと報告している19。
問題定義の座には、社会学と科学哲学の側からの補強もある。 Merton は specified ignorance(さらなる知識の土台を築くために知る必要があるが、まだ知られていないことの明示的な認識)を、問いの単位として置いた20。 漠然と「わかっていない」ではなく、何がわからないかを名指しできる形にすること自体が知的な達成にあたる。 Laudan は科学の進歩を問題解決と定義し、経験的問題と概念的問題を区別したうえで、概念的問題の解決が前進を牽引すると論じた21。 Nickles は、問題とは解が満たすべき制約の集合だと分析した22。 この見方では、問いを新しくするとは制約を組み替えることになる。 Dorst は設計推論の核をアブダクション2(既知のフレームへの当てはめではなく、フレームそのものの創造)として定式化しており23、制約の組み替えと同じ操作をデザインの側から記述している。 この生成器をAI研究の盤面に当てた実演は ai-research-gaps-abduction と problem-definition-metagame にある。
処方が豊富にある一方で、実践は薄い。 Wald らは高等教育研究5誌の124論文を内容分析し、約80%に空白の言明があるものの多くが暗黙で、約27%はその空白がなぜ重要なのかの根拠を欠いていたと報告した24。 空白を指摘することと、その空白が埋まる価値を論証することは、別の作業である。 四座説が「Problem Definition の新規性」と呼ぶものは、後者を指していると読むのが妥当だろう。
Materials という座
材料の座は、四つのなかで最も語られてこなかった。 語られてこなかっただけで、機構としては古くから同定されている。
Merton は specified ignorance と同じエッセイで strategic research materials を置いた20。 説明したい現象を、格別に有利な形で示してくれる研究対象のことである。 問いが先にあって材料を選ぶのではなく、材料が問いの解像度を決めるという順序がここにある。 Rheinberger は実験系と epistemic things の概念で、問いが明確化される前に実験系が設定され、モノの予期せぬ振る舞いが問いを産出する過程を記述した25。 Galison は装置と実験的実践の物質文化が、問いのスタイルそのものを分岐させることを示した26。 de Solla Price は、科学的道具立てが科学と技術を双方向に前進させる媒体だと論じている27。 Steinle は、理論主導でも仮説検定でもなく、概念と問いの生成を目的とする探索的実験を類型として同定した28。
材料の座が制度として認められたのは、ごく最近である。 NeurIPS は2021年に Datasets and Benchmarks トラックを新設した。 設置理由として公式に説明されたのは、データセット論文が本会議で年5件未満しか採択されていなかったという事実だった29。 公募要項は、既存データセットの監査や収集実践そのものも貢献として歓迎すると明記している30。 2026年にはトラック名が Evaluations & Datasets に変わり、否定的結果と批判的分析と方法論が主貢献として公認された31。 ACL Rolling Review は、査読を Soundness と Excitement の二軸に分離して novelty 単独のスコアを置かない一方32、Datasets と Software を独立したスコア項目として設けている33。
材料の座が四座説のなかで魅力的に見えるのは、費用が中程度でありながら他の座への波及が大きいからである。 新しい材料は、その材料でしか答えられない問いを連れてくる。 ただし新設トラックの存在自体が示しているのは、材料貢献が主流の審査枠では長く評価されにくかったという事実でもある。
Methods という座
方法の座には、他の座にない自己増殖性がある。 方法が新しいと、その方法が生む問いも新しくなる。
Gigerenzer は、統計的推論の道具(分散分析、有意性検定)が心の理論そのもののメタファーへ転化した歴史を追い、tools-to-theories というヒューリスティックを定式化した34。 道具として導入されたものが、やがて心のモデルとして受け入れられる。 Greenwald は、手法が前例のないデータを生み、そのデータが前例のない理論を誘発するという双方向の相乗を主張し、ノーベル賞の内訳分析で手法貢献の比重を示した35。 同じ Greenwald らは、理論検証への志向が確証バイアスを生んで進展を妨げる条件を分析し、理論の限界条件を探す condition-seeking を代替として推奨している36。
方法の座と問題の座を独立に動かせるという前提には、認知科学からの留保がつく。 Klahr と Dunbar は科学的発見を仮説空間と実験空間の双対探索としてモデル化した37。 二つの空間の探索は交互に進み、片方の移動が他方で移動できる範囲を変える。 四座説は座を並列の選択肢として扱うが、少なくとも Problem Definition と Methods は、選ぶというより連動して動くものとして観察されている。 方法の複数性をデザイン研究の側から見た整理は ai-research-gaps-method-pluralism にある。
Results という座の費用
Results で勝負するのは費用が莫大だから避けたい、という判断は、証拠のうえでも支持できる。 ただしその前に、Results という語が二つの別物を指していることを分けておく必要がある。
一つは、大きな結果を出すために資源を積む設計である。 大規模な無作為化比較試験、長期追跡、大量のデータ収集がここに入る。 もう一つは、予期せぬ結果に出くわすことである。 Merton は、予期せず変則的で戦略的なデータの観察が新理論の契機になる型を serendipity pattern と呼んだ38。 Dunbar は分子生物学4研究室を1年間参与観察し、予期せぬ結果の扱いと類推が新しい問いを生む中心機構だと報告した39。 Alvesson と Kärreman は、経験的データと期待の齟齬(breakdown、mystery)を理論的洞察の出発点に据えている40。
費用が莫大なのは前者だけである。 後者は材料と方法の座に投資した副産物として出てくるもので、独立に予算を組めるものではない。 四座説が避けようと言っているのは前者に限られる。
その前者についても、避ける理由は費用だけではない。 Foster らは MEDLINE の化学物質関係ネットワークで研究戦略を分類し、革新的な戦略を取る論文が全体の約14%にとどまることを示した41。 残りは既知の物質の近傍を探る保守的な戦略である。 革新的戦略は無視されるリスクが高い一方、高インパクトと受賞の確率も高いという分布になっている。 Rzhetsky らは同じデータで、科学者の探索が集合的発見を最大化する戦略から乖離していることを示した42。 結果の追認に投じられる資源は、さらに少ない。 Hornbæk らは4つの発表媒体の891論文を調査し、先行結果の再現を試みた論文が3%だったと報告した43。 RepliCHI のパネルは、CHI の新規性重視文化が再現研究を抑圧しているという問題提起として出されたものである44。 CHI の貢献型に検証と再現が明示的に加えられたのは、この抑圧への制度的応答にあたる3。
二座以上という処方は支持されているか
四座説の中心にあるのは、組合せの主張である。 一座だけでは弱く、二座以上でそこそこの新規性があれば落としづらい。 支持する証拠と、正面から矛盾する証拠の両方がある。
支持側は、知識の組合せを計量した一連の研究である。 Uzzi らは1790万件の論文を引用誌ペアの z 値で分析し、最高インパクトの論文が「例外的に慣行的な組合せ」に「異例な組合せの侵入」を併せ持つことを示した45。 この型の論文は高被引用になる確率が2倍だった。 Shi と Evans は内容と文脈の組合せをハイパーグラフで予測し、最も意外な組合せが高被引用率をランダム比で大きく上げること、そしてそれが遠い分野のアウトサイダーによって生じやすいことを報告した46。 Arts と Veugelers は特許ネットワークで、馴染みのある構成要素を新しい仕方で組み合わせた場合にのみ突破確率が上がり、慣行的な再結合では上がらないと示した47。 Weitzman は、アイデアの組合せ的増殖を成長の源泉として定式化している48。
ただし、これらが測っているのは知識要素の組合せであって、論文の座の組合せではない。 引用誌のペアや内容と文脈の対応は、Problem Definition と Methods という節の対に置き換えられていない。 座への読み替えは類推であり、直接の検証ではない。
支持側の内部にも、処方を修正する条件がついている。 Uzzi らの結果は「二つとも極端に新しくする」ではなく、「大部分を慣行に置き、一点だけ異例を差し込む」に近い形をしている。 Fleming は、前例のない組合せが発明価値の平均を下げる一方で分散を大きく上げることを示した49。 Boudreau らは研究提案の無作為割付評価実験で、評価者が自分の専門に近すぎる提案も新規性が高すぎる提案も低く評価することを示した50。 Criscuolo らは R&D 選定パネルの実データで、組織が中程度の新規性の案件に資金を出しやすいと報告している51。 Johnson と Proudfoot は、新規性が高いアイデアほど評価者間の分散が大きくなり、分散の大きさ自体がリスク信号として投資意欲を下げることを実験と公文書分析で示した52。 Wang らは2001年の全分野約105万件を追跡し、新規性の高い論文が短期の被引用と掲載誌の指標で不利になる一方、長期ではトップ1%入りの確率が高く、隣接分野で遅れて認識されると報告した53。 Trapido は、新規性への認知プレミアムが、過去に新規性で実績を積んだ著者に偏在することを示している54。
矛盾する側の証拠は一つだが、四座説を正面から狙っている。 Zhao らは Nature Communications 掲載の15,322件を LLM で理論、手法、結果の三次元に分類し、結果ベースの新規性のみを持つ論文が、三次元すべてを持つ論文より多く引用され、上位ランク入りの確率も高いと報告した55。 組合せが単一次元に勝つという主張と、Results 座は避けるべきという主張の両方に逆らう結果である。 ただしこれはプレプリントで、査読状況を確認できていない。 そして今回の収集では、複数次元の新規性の組合せが単一次元より評価を上げることを直接検証した査読済みの実証研究は見つからなかった。 四座説の中心的な処方は、支持側も反証側も、直接の査読済み証拠を欠いた状態にある。
「二座以上あれば査読者は落としづらい」という部分にも、別方向からの留保がつく。 落としづらさを設計できるという前提は、査読の判定が安定していることを暗に仮定している。 NeurIPS 2014年の一貫性実験を再分析した Cortes と Lawrence は、170論文を二つの委員会が独立に審査した結果、採択判断の不一致率が26%、採択された論文が再審で生き残る確率が約50%だったと報告した56。 2021年の再実験でも不一致率は23%で、規模が拡大してもノイズ水準は変わらなかった57。 座を二つ押さえることの効果は、この水準のノイズの上に乗る。
デザイン研究に持ち込むと何がはみ出すか
四座分類をデザイン研究にそのまま適用すると、収まらない貢献が出る。 はみ出すのはアーティファクトである。
Frayling は、art and design の研究を into / through / for の三型に分けた58。 このうち through、つまり制作を通じた研究では、作られたモノ自体が知識の担い手になる。 Zimmerman らは research through design を研究方法として位置づけ、制約が不足した問題を扱う設計者の強みを貢献の源泉に据えた59。 Gaver は、この方法が生む理論が暫定的で文脈依存的であってよく、収束的な理論を目指す必要はないと論じている60。 Höök と Löwgren は、個別のアーティファクトより抽象的で一般理論には至らない中間水準の知識形態を strong concepts として定義した61。 Gaver と Bowers は、作品群への注釈という形式で、理論化を経ずに知識を伝達する annotated portfolios を提案した62。 Cross はデザインを科学と人文に並ぶ第三の知の様式として定位し63、Stolterman はデザイン実践の複雑性が科学的複雑性と異なるため、研究は処方ではなく準備として機能すべきだと論じた64。
アーティファクトは Materials ではない。 材料は問いに答えるために使われるものだが、制作を通じた研究のアーティファクトは答えの側にある。 かといって Results でもない。 測定された帰結ではなく、モノとして提示された可能性だからである。 四座は測定を前提にした構成であって、制作を前提にした構成ではない。 デザイン研究の方法論的な地形は design-research-methodology-mainstream と design-epistemology-methodology-foundations に整理してある。
デザイン研究の側でも、何が貢献かは決着していない。 Cash は Design Studies 掲載の467論文(2004年から2018年)を引用分析し、理論構築がインパクトを最もよく予測すると示したうえで、理論発展の停滞を診断した65。 Davis らは9つの博士プログラムの指導者による合意文書で、PhD が一般化可能な知識、DDes が特定文脈の設計判断への寄与と、学位ごとに貢献要件を分けた66。 四座を使うなら、アーティファクト貢献を別枠として明示的に足す必要がある。
四座説の採点
文献に当てたうえで、四座説の各主張がどこまで支持されるかを整理する。
- 五座という構成上の分割:学術的な定式化としては該当なし。IMRaD の節と貢献の型を規範的に対応づけた文献は見つからなかった。ただし各座に対応する独立の系譜は存在する。
- Related Work は研究論文の座ではない:生成の座としては支持される。名乗りの座としては否定される(CARS の Move 2、Locke と Golden-Biddle、Luzón Marco、Kwan、Hyland、Patriotta)。
- Problem Definition が座になる:強く支持される。処方(problematization、specified ignorance、概念的問題、アブダクション2)も、実践の希少性の実証(52本の分析、124論文の空白言明分析)も揃っている。
- Materials が座になる:機構としては支持される(strategic research materials、実験系、道具立て、探索的実験)。制度としての承認は2021年以降と新しい。
- Methods が座になる:支持される(tools-to-theories、手法が理論を誘発する相乗)。ただし Problem Definition と独立に動かせるという前提には留保がつく(双対探索)。
- Results で勝負するのは費用が莫大:規模で勝つ設計については支持される(革新的戦略14%、再現研究3%)。予期せぬ結果による問いの生成は別物で、費用の議論は当てはまらない。
- 二座以上で落としづらくなる:知識の組合せの計量からの間接的な支持はあるが、座の組合せの直接検証は査読済み文献に存在しない。唯一の直接測定であるプレプリントは反対の結果を報告している。加えて評価側には、距離ペナルティ、中程度選好、評価分散、短期の不利という一連の抑制が働く。
収集の空白
- problematization 型の問いが被引用や採択で有利かを直接測った実証研究は見つからなかった。
- 複数次元の新規性の組合せが単一次元より評価を上げることを直接検証した査読済み実証研究は見つからなかった。
- 実験コストの高い研究と低コスト研究の被引用収益を比較した研究は見つからなかった。Results 座の費用対効果の直接証拠が欠けている。
- 測定装置の刷新が新しい研究課題群を開いたことを計量的に検証した査読論文は見つからなかった。該当する文献はいずれも歴史的または哲学的な分析である。
- デザイン教育に特化した「問いの立て方」の介入研究は見つからなかった。近いものは農学系と医学系にとどまる。
- 「問いの新規性」と「答えの新規性」を明示的に区別した哲学的専論は見つからなかった。
- IMRaD の各節と貢献の種類を規範的に対応づけた学術的定式化は見つからなかった。
LLM が問いの生成側に入ってきたことで、この空白の一部は近く埋まる見込みがある。 Si らは100名超の NLP 研究者による盲検評価で、LLM が生成したアイデアが人間の専門家より新規性スコアで有意に高く、実現可能性ではやや劣ると報告した67。 評価側でも、査読報告から新規性に関する言明を抽出して自動評価する試み68と、1,684の論文と査読のペアによるベンチマーク69が出ている。 新規性の測定手法自体のレビューも整理された70。 生成が安くなったとき、四座のうちどれが希少なままでいるのかは、まだ測られていない。
